Pest Control.

Visit on 7th February to D.S.I.R. Plant Infestation Station, Slough. Long discussions with Dr. G. B. V. Herford, Director.

Visit on 19th February a.m. to Plant Protection Ltd. Victoria Station House. Long discussion with D. G. Whitelaw re Gamexane products, etc. p.m. to I.C.I. Nobel House, long discussion with W. V. Blewett, Dr. Richardson and Dr. Irvine re gamexane, weed killers, fertilizers, compost etc.

New Crops for Hong Kong.

Discussion on 8th February with Dr. M. A. H. Tincker of R. H. S. Gardens Lab., Wisley, Ripley, re onions etc.

The Vegetable Marketing Scheme which provides for a Monopoly of the purchasing, transporting and marketing of the New Terri- tories mainland vegetables was accepted by the C.C.A.0. on 1st February, but not yet in operation.

Staff: as far as I have been informed, will include following key personnel:

Father T. F. Ryan, S.J., Chairman (temporary)

R. A. Pereira (Portuguese), great knowledge of Colony,

skilled in goats and other farm animals.

Lee Shiu Ying, graduate (Agric) Lingnam University, Canton,

extensive knowledge of Colony.

S. K. Loong recalled from India; business and accounts.

Y. N. Ho, graduate in Horticulture, Imperial University of Japan (1937), experienced in vegetable gardening; assistant market manager.

Great care is being taken in selection of staff.

Someone will, sooner or later, have to take the place of Father Ryan who is also acting as Superintendent of the B. & F. Department.
